| Abstract: | This application was born out of the project designated História do Alentejo (History of the Alentejo) carried out during recent years by the CIDEHUS at the University of Évora. Since one of the main aspects of the scientific programme of the unit is centred precisely on this theme area and as the team of investigators has produced a range of studies dealing with the South of Portugal, it seemed opportune to encourage a synthetic study of the region over the long term. Recent efforts will be complemented by the large number of regional studies and research projects carried out during the course of nearly a century by scholars of the highest calibre (for example, Gabriel Pereira, Cunha Rivara and Túlio Espanca), and this will ensure the viability of what we believe constitutes a pioneering undertaking in Portugal. |
