| Abstract: | The project ‘State, School, and Diversity’ intends to investigate the way in which the public system reacts to the differentiation between public schools and how the professors, while central actors in the schools, construct the incorporation. It is particularly important to know the answers to new challenges brought about by international migration, through which questions specifically focus on students that are children of migrants. Every student is considered to be of migrant descent, of Portuguese or foreign nationality, whose ancestors, or at least one ancestor lived in another country throughout a significant portion of their lives (for example, students whose parents emigrated to France or Brazil and returned to Portugal; children of parents that returned from African ex-colonies, coming directly or indirectly to Portugal after their independence; children of people coming from Ukraine, Germany, Brazil, England, Cape Verde, etc., and chose to reside in Portugal permanently or temporarily). The survey, running since 2009, is entirely anonymous, and has provided knowledge to the responsible structures of the Ministry of Education. The participation of the selected professors is absolutely indispensable, whether guaranteeing statistical representation for the data, or for producing significant and useful results for the school and the country. The project ‘State, School, and Diversity’ is a CESNOVA (research center at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa) initiative and is financed by the Science and Technology Foundation (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia) under the contract IME/SDE/81861/2006. This project intends to continue to explore a research subject area begun by previous research focusing on responses from the Democratic State concerning diversity challenges. Migrations and public school constitute ideal opportunities for exploring this area of inquiry. This project’s principle objective is to promote the understanding of school as a key institution for the integration of a demographically and culturally diverse population. This project should be understood as a second phase of a survey begun in 2004 (IME/SOC/49911/2003), that analyzed student perceptions of school, school performances, and transitions from school to the job market, comparing challenges, behavior, and attitudes between children of immigrants and children of natives. |
