Abstract:

Mobility Management (MM) is a concept that promotes sustainable transport and manages the demand for automobile usage by altering attitudes and behavior. It is based on measures (such as information, communication, and the organization of services and coordination of  the activities between different partners) that strengthen the efficiency of physical measures in the scope of transportation infrastructures. MM measures, contrary to physical measures, do not necessarily require large investments, and can produce a very high cost-benefit ratio.
Recently, after solutions based on transport offers, it has been considered fundamental to intervene in the management of transportation demand, which essentially lies in altering peoples’ perceptions and behavior in respect to travel.
This project’s objective is to promote awareness and behavioral change within students of a school community using a research-action methodology. By implementing MM measures, the project aims to increase student travel by foot through the school’s and other relative institutions’ involvement, such as parishes, municipal councils, and the police, in addition to other local institutions.
A comparative strategy will be used in selecting the different school communities located in the councils that participate in this project (Loures and Barreiro).
The project is a financed by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and it has the municipalities of Loures and Barreiro as partners.
