Abstract:

This project aims to analyze the relative importance of state action in the emergence of social inquiry practices in Portugal and in the creation and consolidation of knowledge focused on the living conditions of the population. The project also intends to place its advent in the context of previous practices of inquiry and a political and intellectual context marked by renewed concerns about the situation of the working and lower classes and, more generally, with the moral and physical regeneration of the nation. The project aims eventually to  withdraw from the research work proposed implications for the history of the social sciences in Portugal, particularly in light of the relationship between research and state social history of sociology and international dimension of each of these two topics.
